![]() Swansea City FC began life in 1912 as Swansea Town. They were founded as a professional club and took up residence at the Vetch Field. Founder members of Division ThreeThe club played in the Southern League until 1920 and became founder members of Division Three when the Southern League was incorporated. They were Division Three (South) champions in 1925, winning promotion to the Second Division. FA Cup Semi-FinalistsThe following season they finished fifth in Division Two and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. During the 1930s the club's form declined but they managed to avoid relegation until 1947. They returned to Division Two in 1949, and remained there for the next sixteen years. During this time they also reached the FA Cup semi-final again in 1964. In 1965 Swansea slipped into Division Three and in 1967 they were relegated to Division Four before winning promotion again in 1970. Name Change to Swansea CitySwansea was granted City status in 1971, and the club celebrated by changing its name from Swansea Town to Swansea City. Relegation to Division FourIn 1973 the Swans were relegated to Division Four and in 1975 they faced the humiliation of having to apply for re-election. A Remarkable Climb Through the DivisionsJohn Toshack was appointed player-manager in March 1978 and oversaw a remarkable revival at the club. Successive promotions in 1978 and 1979 took Swansea back to Division Two and in 1981, Swansea were promoted to Division One for the first time. DeclineThey finishing in a remarkable sixth place in 1982, but thereafter followed a decline every bit as dramatic as their climb to the top. Relegated in 1983 and 1984, and beset by financial problems, Swansea City was formally wound up on 20 December 1985. A rescue package was quickly put together, but unable to sign or loan new players, Swansea were relegated to Division Four in 1986. Despite their off field travails the club won promotion to Division Three in 1988 and five years later reached the play-offs. In 1996, Swansea were relegated to Division Three (old Fourth Division). They were promoted as champions in 2000, but relegated again the following season. During the 2001-02 season the club changed hands several times and, once again on the verge of bankruptcy, they narrowly avoiding relegation to the Conference in 2003. Move to the Liberty StadiumThey were promoted to League One in 2005 and that same year left the Vetch Field, their home of more than 90 years, and moved to the 20 000 capacity Liberty Stadium. In 2008, they were League One champions and returned to the second tier of English football for the first time since 1984.
