![]() Swindon Town FC was founded by the Reverend William Pitt in December 1879. The team turned professional in 1894 and were founded members of the Southern League that year. Move to the County GroundTwo years later Swindon took out a lease on the County Ground, which remains their home to this day. In 1910 Town reached the semi-final of the FA Cup where they lost to Newcastle. The following season they were Southern League champions, and faced Manchester United in the Charity Shield, losing 8-4. Founder Members of Division ThreeIn 1921 Swindon, became founder members of the Third Division of the Football League, where they settled in as a mid-table team rarely in contention for promotion. In 1958, when the regional divisions were abolished, they were placed in the new Third Division, before winning promotion to Division Two in 1963. Town spent two years in Division Two before being relegated back to the Third Division in 1965. League Cup Winners1968-69 brought the club's greatest achievement to date when they beat Arsenal 3-1 in extra time to win the League Cup. That same season they also won promotion to Division Two. Relegated to Division FourIn 1974 Swindon dropped back into the Third Division and in 1982 they were relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time in their history. In 1986, they won the Division Four title and a year later won promotion to Division Two via the play offs. Financial IrregularitiesThen in 1990 Swindon won the Second Division playoffs to earn promotion to Division One. Their joy though was short-lived as, due to irregularities over payments to players, their promotion was overturned. Promotion to the Premier LeagueGlen Hoddle was appointed player-manager in 1991 and two years later Swindon won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. However, Hoddle resigned to join Chelsea and it quickly became apparent that Swindon were out of their depth in the top flight. They made a swift return to Division One, conceding 100 goals in the process. AdministrationRelegated again the following season, Swindon bounced straight back as champions but, in 1999, the club entered administration and was relegated to Division Two (old Third Division). Swindon dropped in the bottom tier of the Football League in 2006, but were promoted back to League One (old Third Division) in 2007. In 2010 they reached the playoff final but lost out to Millwall.
