Football History

Walsall FC was founded (as Walsall Town Swifts) in 1888 after the merger of two local clubs.

Founder Member of Division Two

The Swifts joined the Football Alliance in 1889 and became founder members of Division Two when the Alliance was incorporated into the Football League in 1892.

In 1893 they changed their name to the current form.

Voted Out (Twice!)

The club were voted out of the Football League in 1895, but returned after a season in the Midland League.

They were voted out again in 1901 and returned to the Midland League, before moving down to the Birmingham League in 1903.

Back in the League

After an unexceptional twenty-year career at this level they were invited to join the new Third Division (North)in 1921.

Walsall competed in both the Northern and Southern sections of the Third Division during the period between the wars.

Giantkillers

In 1933, the club achieved its greatest ever FA Cup win, beating Arsenal, 2-0.

However, performances in the league remained poor and they had to apply for re-election in 1938 and again in 1939.

Ups and Downs

After the war the club continued to struggle in Division Four until successive promotions in 1960 and 1961 took them all the way to the Second Division.

They survived in Division Two for three seasons before relegation took them back to the Third Division.

They would spend the next 25 years at this level, apart from one season spent in Division Four (1979-80).

In 1988, they were promoted to Division Two, but then suffered successive relegations which took them back to the Fourth Division in 1990.

Five years later they were promoted again and in 1999, the club were back in Division One (old Division Two), but their stay lasted only a single season.

In 2001 the club returned to Division One via the play-offs, but were relegated in 2004 and again in 2006 to return to the fourth tier, now called League Two.

The following season they were League Two champions.
