Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers were founded in 1887 by apprentices working in the local furniture industry.

The club joined the Southern League Second Division in 1896 but, as an amateur club competing against professionals, they struggled.

In 1907, they left the Southern League to join the Great Western Suburban League.

After the war, Wycombe joined the Spartan League, winning the championship in 1921. They then moved up to the Isthmian League, where they would remain for the next 60 years.

They won the Isthmian League title for the first time in 1956 and, during the Sixties, won four more championships.

However, it was not until 1985 that they made the step up to the Gola Football Alliance (forerunner of the Conference).

The following season Wanderers were relegated but it took them only one season to return to the Conference.

In February 1990, Martin O'Neill arrived as manager and, in 1992 Wycombe won the Conference Championship and promotion to the Football League.

A year later the club won promotion to Division Two via the play offs.

Wycombe enjoyed a sensational FA Cup run in 2001, reaching the semi-final, before going down 2-1 to Liverpool at Villa Park.

However, in 2004, after a terrible start to the campaign, they were relegated to League Two.

They were League Cup semi-finalists in 2007, going out to eventual winners Chelsea.

Wycombe reached the play-offs in 2008, but were beaten by Stockport County.
